Mount Too Much For Baptist Bible

NEWBURGH, N.Y. - The Mount Saint Mary College men's tennis team crawled back to even (7-7 overall) with an 8-1, non-conference victory over Baptist Bible College on Monday evening.

The Knights jumped out to an early lead with wins in each of the three doubles matches.  Seniors Mike McNicholas (Milton, N.Y.) and Nate Ahlberg (Catskill, N.Y.) bumped up to the number one spot and played well in an 8-4 win.  Senior Zach Conlon (Huntington, N.Y.) and freshman Conor Merryman (Marlboro, N.Y.) also bumped up a spot, but were dominant in an 8-1 victory.  Finally, junior Bryan Pujol (East Rockaway, N.Y.) teamed with freshman Nate Dimmie (Middletown, N.Y.) for an 8-0 triumph in the third position.

Outside of a tough loss by Dimmie at the top of the lineup, the Knights eased to five singles wins.  Trailing 4-1 in the opening set at second, Ahlberg won five straight games to win the opener, 6-4, and took the second set, 6-2.  McNicholas played a consistent match at third to win, 6-2, 6-0, while Conlon completely controlled his match in a 6-1, 6-0 victory at fourth.  Merryman took a 6-1, 6-2 decision at fifth and Pujol served very well in a 6-0, 6-1 win at sixth.

Mount Saint Mary returns to Skyline competition on Wednesday with a match against Yeshiva University.  The match is slated for a 6:00 p.m. start in Newburgh.
