Mount Comes Up Short in Championship After Impressive Season

FARMINGDALE, N.Y. – The men's tennis team fell shy of the Skyline Conference championship by losing 5-2 to Farmingdale State College on Saturday in Farmingdale. The Knights finish the year at 11-6, marking just the second 10-win season in program history and the best record for the program since 2008.

Juniors Mike McNicholas (Milton, N.Y.) and Nathanial Ahlberg (Catskill, N.Y.) cruised at second doubles for the Mount. Both players served extremely well on their way to an 8-2 win. With the teams tied at 1-1, freshmen Greg Jacob (Ridgefield, Conn.) and Stat Willand (Sparta, N.J.) battled at first doubles, but ultimately lost 9-7, and Farmingdale claimed a 2-1 advantage headed to the singles play.

Farmingdale quickly nabbed points at first and third singles, leaving them just a point shy of the title. Now needing all four remaining matches, the Mount's Jacob came through at second singles with a 6-2, 6-4 win. The match was a complete reversal of the match played between the two during the regular season. It was Jacob's 11th consecutive victory.

Junior Zach Conlon (Huntington, N.Y.) fought hard to fight off defeat, but ultimately succumbed in a second set tiebreaker. After a gutsy hold to force a tiebreak, Conlon dropped the breaker, 7-1.

The other matches on court were halted with the Farmingdale clinch. Mount sophomore Kevin Ryan (West Islip, N.Y.) was up a set and 5-4, while Ahlberg was tied at 2-2 in the second set after dropping the opener in a tiebreak.

The Mount finishes their season with an overall record of 11-6, the best record and the most victories for the program under third year coach Justin Satkowski. The Knights, who do not have a senior on the team, return all players next season.
