Knights Knock Off Defending Champions

SELDEN, N.Y. – Extending their winning streak to three matches, the Mount Saint Mary College men's tennis team defeated St. Joseph's College, the defending Skyline Conference champions, by a score of 6-3 on Sunday afternoon. The Knights improved to 5-4 overall and to 2-1 in the Skyline.

Once again, the Mount seized control of the match by snagging two of the three doubles points. Juniors Mike McNicholas (Milton, N.Y.) and Nathaniel Ahlberg (Catskill, N.Y.) fought through the tough wind for an 8-4 victory at second doubles. Junior Zach Conlon (Huntington, N.Y.) and sophomore Kevin Ryan (West Islip, N.Y.) held on for a narrow 8-6 win at third doubles to give the Knights an early edge.

Down the singles lineup, it was freshman Greg Jacob (Ridgefield, Conn.) who dictated play at second singles en route to a 6-3, 6-0 win. Conlon would claim the next point by battling to a 6-3, 6-4 at sixth singles. Now just needing one more point, freshman Stat Willand (Sparta, N.J.) came through once again with a three-set win at third singles. Willand dropped the opener, 6-1, but came on in the second set to win, 6-3. He closed the door with a 6-3 triumph in set number three, clinching the overall team victory for the second match in a row.

Ryan would prove to be the sixth point of the afternoon for the Knights, but only after mounting an incredible third set comeback. After splitting the opening two sets, Ryan fell into a 5-0 hole in the third. Unfazed, the sophomore stayed patient and rattled off seven straight games for a 2-6, 6-4, 7-5 win.

St. Joseph's had won 20 consecutive matches against Skyline opponents before today's match, a streak dating back to the start of the 2009 season.

The Knights continue Skyline play this week with matches on Wednesday and Thursday. They'll travel to Sage on Wednesday for a 4:00 p.m. start before hosting Bard on Thursday at 3:30 p.m.
