LATHAM, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College men's tennis team reached double-digit victories for just the second time in program history with a 9-0 defeat of Sage College on Wednesday. The Knights, winners of eight of their last nine, improve to 10-5 overall and finish their conference season at 6-1.
The Mount swept all three doubles matches, allowing a total of just three games in the three matches. Freshmen
Greg Jacob (Ridgefield, Conn.) and
Stat Willand (Sparta, N.J.) pitched a shutout at number one doubles, claiming an 8-0 win. Juniors
Mike McNicholas (Milton, N.Y.) and
Nathaniel Ahlberg (Catskill, N.Y.) were 8-1 winners at second doubles, while junior
Zach Conlon (Huntington, N.Y.) teamed with sophomore
Bryan Pujol (East Rockaway, N.Y.) for an 8-2 victory at third doubles.
McNicholas faced the only challenge in the singles lineup and needed a third set tiebreaker to claim his match at the top of the lineup. After dropping the opening set, 7-5 in a tiebreak, McNicholas rolled to a 6-1 win in the second set. Pushed to a tiebreak in the third, the junior jumped out to an early start and nailed down the match with a 7-2 tiebreak victory.
Jacob and Willand were 6-0, 6-0 winners at the second and third spots, respectively. Ahlberg rolled to a 6-2, 6-1 win at four, while sophomore
Kevin Ryan (West Islip, N.Y.) turned in a 6-1, 6-2 win at fifth. Junior
Brian Murphy (Elmhurst, N.Y.) earned his first collegiate victory with a 6-1, 6-0 triumph at sixth singles.
The Knights have earned the second seed in next week's Skyline Conference tournament and will face an opponent to be determined in a semifinal match on Thursday.
