Freshmen Come Up Big As Mount Defeats Yeshiva in Key Skyline Match

EDGEWATER, N.J. – With Mount Saint Mary College trailing, 4-3, freshmen Greg Jacob (Ridgefield, Conn.) and Stat Willand (Sparta, N.J.) pulled out three-set singles victories to clinch a 5-4 win over Yeshiva in a Skyline Conference match on Thursday evening. The Knights evened their overall record at 4-4 and their Skyline record at 1-1.

Jacob was the first to come through with a three-set win, rallying out of a first-set hole. After losing the opening set, 6-2, the freshman responded to win the second set, 6-2. After trading four breaks to start the third, Jacob finally held his serve to take a 3-2 advantage. He broke again to make it 4-2 and then cruised to the finish line, closing out an impressive three-set triumph.

Now with the overall match tied at 4-4, it came down to Willand at third singles. After dropping a tight second set in a tiebreaker, Willand held serve to open the third and then broke serve immediately. At 3-1, the freshman fought for a tough service hold and then closed out the match with two well-played games, making the final set, 6-1.

Junior Nathaniel Ahlberg (Catskill, N.Y.) was the other singles winner for the Mount. After fighting through a 7-5 first set, Ahlberg rolled in the second set, 6-0.

The Knights put themselves in a winning position by capturing two of the three doubles matches. Ahlberg teamed with junior Mike McNicholas (Milton, N.Y.) for an 8-3 victory at second doubles, while junior Zach Conlon (Huntington, N.Y.) and sophomore Kevin Ryan (West Islip, N.Y.) claimed an 8-3 win at third doubles.

With one crucial Skyline victory in hand, the Knights head to St. Joseph's College for another Skyline match on Sunday. The match is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. at the Ammerman campus of Suffolk County Community College.
