CLARKS SUMMIT, Pa. – Picking up a much-needed win before heading back to Skyline Conference play, the Mount Saint Mary College men's tennis team defeated Baptist Bible College, 8-1, on Wednesday afternoon. The Knights improve to 3-4 on the year.
Freshmen
Greg Jacob (Ridgefield, Conn.) and Statler Willand (Sparta, N.J.) got things started with a solid 8-4 win at first doubles. Juniors
Mike McNicholas (Milton, N.Y.) and
Nathaniel Ahlberg (Catskill, N.Y.) continued to roll at second doubles, collecting an 8-4 win, while junior
Zach Conlon (Huntington, N.Y.) and sophomore
Kevin Ryan (West Islip, N.Y.) were dominant in an 8-1 victory at third doubles.
Jacob played a consistent match on his way to a 6-2, 6-4 win at second singles. Ahlberg, Ryan, and Conlon were unchallenged at the bottom of the singles lineup, yielding a total of just five games between the three of them. Willand battled to a win at third singles, eventually prevailing in a super tiebreaker, 10-8, after playing two tiebreak sets. The freshman won the second set tiebreaker, 7-0.
The Knights will make a quick turn-around, travelling to play Yeshiva University on Thursday evening. The match is set for an 8:00 p.m. start at the Binghamton Racquet Club in Edgewater, New Jersey.
