NEWBURGH, N.Y. – Opening up their Skyline Conference schedule, the Mount Saint Mary College men's tennis team lost a tight, 6-3 match to Farmingdale State College on a blustery Saturday afternoon. The Knights fall to 2-3 overall and to 0-1 in Skyline play, while the Rams bumped to 2-0 (2-0 Skyline).
Once again, the Mount played well in doubles action and nabbed two of the three points. Juniors
Mike McNicholas (Milton, N.Y.) and
Nathaniel Ahlberg (Catskill, N.Y.) rallied for a 9-7 decision at second doubles, while junior
Zach Conlon (Huntington, N.Y.) and sophomore
Kevin Ryan (West Islip, N.Y.) teamed for an 8-2 win at third doubles. Freshmen
Greg Jacob (Ridgefield, Conn.) and
Stat Willand (Sparta, N.J.) played a strong match at the first position, but ultimately fell, 9-8 (7-5).
Needing three points to clinch the match, the Knights only found one point in singles play. Ahlberg was the only winner, taking a 6-1, 7-5 win at fourth singles. Ryan split sets at fifth singles, only to lose in a super tiebreaker, 10-7.
The Knights return to action tomorrow as they'll host Marywood University. The match is slated for a 1:00 p.m. start.
