Match Results

NEWBURGH, N.Y.
– In their inaugural match on the new courts, the Mount Saint Mary College men's tennis team earned a 6-3 decision over Fairleigh Dickinson University on Tuesday afternoon. The Knights improve to 2-2 on the year, while the Devils drop to 1-5.

The Mount got off to a fast start, taking points in two of the three doubles matches. The freshman duo of Greg Jacob (Ridgefield, Conn.) and Stat Willand (Sparta, N.J.) were 8-2 winners at first doubles, while juniors Mike McNicholas (Milton, N.Y.) and Nate Ahlberg (Catskill, N.Y.) eased to an 8-2 win in the second position.

Needing just three points to clinch the match, the Knights took care of business quickly in the singles action. Junior Zach Conlon (Huntington, N.Y.) was an easy 6-1, 6-0 winner at sixth singles, giving the Knights their third point of the afternoon. Soon after, Willand nailed down a 6-0, 6-2 victory at third singles and Jacob clinched the match with a 6-1, 6-3 triumph at second singles.

After dropping the opening set at first singles, McNicholas played a very tough second set, and eventually emerged with a 7-5 win. The junior jumped out quickly in the match tiebreaker and held on for a 10-5 victory.

Ahlberg battled for three sets at fourth singles, but eventually was defeated in a third set tiebreaker. The junior lost the opening set, 6-1, but rallied to win the second, 6-4. In the third set tiebreaker, Ahlberg would claw out of a 4-0 hole before losing, 7-5.

The Knights open Skyline Conference play on Saturday with a home match against Farmingdale State College. Start time is set for 1:00 p.m.
