NEWBURGH, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College women's tennis claimed its third consecutive Skyline Conference championship with a 5-2 win over St. Joseph's College on Saturday afternoon. The Knights are now 13-2 overall and will compete in the NCAA Division III Tournament in May.
Mount Saint Mary jumped out to a 2-1 lead with wins at first and second doubles. Senior
Annmarie Llewellyn (Brookhaven, N.Y.) and junior
Gabriela Murphy-Goldberg (Newburgh, N.Y.) were 8-2 winners at the top spot, while juniors
Emily Gregory (Albertson, N.Y.) and
Jen Gregory (Albertson, N.Y.) snagged an 8-4 win at second doubles. Sophomore
Jaimee Lubniewski (Middletown, N.Y.) and freshman
Alissa Niad (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) battled hard at third doubles, but eventually fell by a score of 9-7.
Murphy-Goldberg and
Emily Gregory sent the Knights to a 4-1 lead with wins at first and fourth singles, respectively. Murphy-Goldberg won 6-2, 6-1 at the top spot, while
Emily Gregory took a 6-1, 6-1 decision at fourth. St. Joseph's claimed the match at second singles to make it 4-2, but
Jen Gregory provided the clinching point with a 6-3, 6-1 win at third singles.
Murphy-Goldberg was named the tournament's most valuable player.
The Knights will compete in their third consecutive NCAA Tournament in May and will be seeking to advance to the second round for the first time in program history.
