NEWBURGH, N.Y. – Boosted by more strong doubles play, the Mount Saint Mary College women's tennis team defeated the College of Staten Island by a score of 7-2 for their ninth consecutive victory on Tuesday evening at the Mount. The Knights are now 9-1 overall.
Senior
Annmarie Llewellyn (Brookhaven, N.Y.) and sophomore
Jaimee Lubniewski (Middletown, N.Y.) were impressive at the top doubles spot, winning the first five games and cruising to an 8-2 win. Juniors
Emily Gregory (Albertson, N.Y.) and
Jen Gregory (Albertson, N.Y.) won the last five games to claim their second doubles match by a score of 8-2, while sophomore
Kristina Swyryt (Vernon, N.J.) and freshman
Alissa Niad (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) rolled to an 8-0 win at third doubles.
The Knights took four of the six singles matches, including straight-set wins by
Jen Gregory and
Emily Gregory at second and third, respectively. Llewellyn was a 6-0, 6-2 winner at fifth, while Niad took home a 6-2, 6-0 victory at sixth.
Lubniewski battled through three tiebreakers at the first singles spot, but ultimately fell in a third-set superbreaker, 10-5. She lost the first set in a tiebreak, 10-8, but held on to win the second in a tiebreak, 7-5. Sophomore
Jillian Torre (Bohemia, N.Y.) met a similar fate at fourth singles despite winning the first set, 6-2. Torre dropped the second set, 7-2 in a tiebreak, and then lost a super-tiebreaker, 10-2.
The Knights will take on Purchase College in a key Skyline Conference match on Friday. The match will start at 5:00 p.m. in Purchase, New York.
