Women Win Two, Men Split

NEWBURGH, N.Y. – In their last home meet of the season, the Mount Saint Mary College swim teams fared well in a double dual meet with Post University and Fairleigh Dickinson University. The Mount's women's team won both meets to improve to 9-4, while the men split and ran their record to 10-3.

With superior depth, the Mount women defeated Post by a margin of 60-30 and Fairleigh Dickinson by a score of 76-16. The men blew past Fairleigh Dickinson, 71-9, but were defeated by Post, 54-33.

On the women's side, sophomore Deirdre Kenny (Brooklyn, N.Y.) was a double winner, capturing both of the long distance events. She won the 100 freestyle in 12:44.26 and the 500 freestyle in 6:11.36, her fastest time of the season.

The only other individual event winner for the women was freshman Allison Wyatt (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) in the 200 individual medley. She posted a time of 2:39.61.

For the men, senior Brian Heitman (Ramsey, N.J.) brought home the only event victory for the Knights, but it came in perhaps the most exciting event of the night. In the 50 freestyle, Heitman edged the field with a time of 23.62, just six one-hundredths slower than his best time of the season.

At the midpoint of the meet, the six seniors for the Mount were honored for their contributions to the team. Heitman, along with teammates Stephen Bloomer (New Windsor, N.Y.), Anthony Celano (Brooklyn, N.Y.), and Dan Courtney (Suffern, N.Y.) were recognized for the men's team, while Shannon McNally (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) and Alex Taliana (Westbury, N.Y.) represented the women's team.

The women's team returns to action at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday with a meet against St. Joseph's College and the College of Mount Saint Vincent in Patchogue, N.Y. The men's squad has a week off before a meet with Maritime on February 3.
