NEWBURGH, N.Y. – Finally breaking through with a Skyline Conference victory, the Mount Saint Mary College men's tennis team defeated Sage on Wednesday night, 9-0. The Knights improved to 4-7 overall and to 1-4 in the conference.
In doubles action, senior
John Como (Wingdale, N.Y.) and sophomore
Mike McNicholas (Marlboro, N.Y.) captured an 8-1 decision at first doubles, while senior
Brian Cangemi (East Northport, N.Y.) and freshman
Bryan Pujol (East Rockaway, N.Y.) won 8-1 at second doubles. Mount Saint Mary completed the sweep as Sage was forced to forfeit the point at third doubles.
McNicholas played a solid match a number one singles, dismissing his opponent, 6-0, 6-1. Senior
Ian Jackson (Washington, N.J.) and freshman
Kevin Ryan (West Islip, N.Y.) were merciless at second and third singles, each taking their match 6-0, 6-0. Como prevailed in a well-contested match at fourth singles, 6-2, 6-1, while senior
Matt D'Angelico (Shelton, Conn.) continued his solid singles play with a 6-2, 6-2 victory at fifth singles.
The Knights return to action on Friday as they'll play host to City College of New York. The match is slated for a 6:30 p.m. start in Cronomer Park.
