NEWBURGH, N.Y. - Leading 2-1 after the doubles competition, the Mount Saint Mary College men's tennis team let a match slip away on Tuesday evening, eventually falling to Bard College, 5-4, in a key Skyline Conference match. The Knights drop to 3-7 overall and to 0-4 in the Skyline.
The continuation of a suspended match saw the Mount take two of the three doubles matches. Sophomore
Mike McNicholas (Marlboro, N.Y.) and senior
John Como (Wingdale, N.Y.) were 8-5 winners at second doubles, while senior
Brian Cangemi (East Northport, N.Y.) and freshman
Bryan Pujol (East Rockaway, N.Y.) also took an 8-5 decision at third doubles. The Knights lost a winnable match at first doubles, 9-7.
Down the singles lineup, freshman
Kevin Ryan (West Islip, N.Y.) added a point for the Knights with a 6-4, 6-4 win in the third position. Como brought the Mount to within one point of victory with a 6-3, 6-3 triumph at fourth singles.
Unfortunately for the Knights, the final three matches would fall to the Raptors. In the last match on court, Cangemi lost in three sets at number five singles (6-3, 0-6, 6-4).
Mount Saint Mary returns to action on Wednesday with a home Skyline Conference match against the Sage Colleges. The start time is set for 6:30 p.m.
