NEWBURGH, N.Y. - Trailing 2-1 after the doubles play, the Mount Saint Mary College men's tennis team rallied to win four of the six singles matches and captured a 5-4 victory over Baptist Bible College on a frigid Friday night in Cronomer Park. The Knights improved to 1-1 on the season.
With the match tied at three-all, the final three singles matches all went to three sets. Senior
Brian Cangemi (East Northport, N.Y.)
rallied from a first set deficit to win his match as fifth singles, 4-6, 6-4, 7-5. At second singles, senior
Ian Jackson (Washington, N.J.) also try to dig out of a first set hole, but came up just short, falling 4-6, 6-3, and 7-5.
Now with the score tied at four-all, senior
John Como (Wingdale, N.Y.) was the only man left standing. Como raced out to a 5-2 advantage in the final set, but allowed his opponent to crawl back into the match at 5-5. The senior held serve to make it 6-5 and then finally capitalized on his fourth match point to give the Knights the victory. Como won 6-2, 4-6, 7-5.
Also coming through for the Knights in a close match was freshman
Kevin Ryan (West Islip, N.Y.). Ryan prevailed, 11-9, in a first set tiebreaker and then closed out the match in the second set, 6-4. Senior
Matt D'Angelico (Shelton, Conn.) rounded out the lineup with an impressive victory at sixth singles. D'Angelico was dominant in the second set, rolling to a 6-3, 6-1 win.
Jackson and Ryan teamed to capture the only doubles point for Mount Saint Mary, taking an 8-3 decision at first doubles.
Up next for Mount Saint Mary is their Skyline Conference opener. The Knights will travel to Bard College on Tuesday, March 30 for a 6:00 p.m. start.
