NEWBURGH, NY – Junior
Ian Jackson (Washington, N.J.) won all four of his matches over the weekend as the Mount Saint Mary College men's tennis team split a pair of matches. The Blue Knights lost to Farmingdale State College on Saturday, 5-4, and defeated the College of Staten Island on Sunday, 6-3.
Against Farmingdale, the Blue Knights had a golden opportunity to seize the early momentum but a tiebreaker at first doubles went the way of the Rams and provided them with a 2-1 lead. Senior
Joe Meilak (Greenville, N.Y.) and freshman
Tom Curran (Washingtonville, N.Y.), playing together for the first time all season, lost in the tiebreaker, 7-3. Junior
Danny Godfrey (West Babylon, N.Y.) teamed with Jackson for an 8-2 win at third doubles.
Down the singles lineup, Meilak continued his winning streak with an impressive 6-0, 6-1 victory at second singles. Junior
John Como (Wingdale, N.Y.) was a winner at fifth singles (6-1, 3-6, 10-7) and Jackson came through in a super tiebreaker as well (6-4, 3-6, 10-7). Farmingdale won the other three matches in straight sets for a 5-4 match victory.
The Blue Knights rebounded well on Sunday, taking five of the six singles matches to defeat the College of Staten Island, 6-3. Curran played his best match of the season in a nice win at first singles (6-2, 6-1) while Como prevailed in yet another tight match (6-4, 6-4). Meilak and Jackson made quick work of their opponents at the third and sixth spots, respectively. Freshman
Zach Conlon (Huntington, N.Y.) played a strong first set and ultimately picked up a 6-0, 6-2 win at fourth singles.
Godfrey and Jackson were an 8-2 winner at third doubles. Meilak and Curran were close once again at first doubles but dropped a 9-7 decision. Meilak/Curran led 6-3 before losing six of the next seven games.
For Meilak, his singles victory on Sunday was the thirty-ninth of his career, a new school record. The senior captured the record from 2008 graduate,
Kyle Reiss.
Mount Saint Mary, still very much alive in the Skyline Conference playoff hunt, will take on Purchase College in a pivotal conference match this Tuesday, April 21. The match is slated for a 6:30 p.m. start.
