PATCHOGUE, NY - The Mount Saint Mary College men's tennis team lost a Skyline Conference match on Saturday, falling to St. Joseph's of Long Island by a score of 8-1. The Blue Knights drop to 0-3 and to 0-2 within the conference.
The Golden Eagles swept the doubles play to open the match. Junior
Danny Godfrey (West Babylon, N.Y.) and freshman
Tom Curran (Washingtonville, N.Y.) raced out to an early 4-1 lead, but couldn't keep their momentum going and eventually fell, 8-5. Junior
Ian Jackson (Washington, N.J.) and freshman
Zach Conlon (Huntington, N.Y.) rallied from an early deficit to make it 5-4 but also wound up losing 8-5.
In singles play, senior
Joe Meilak (Greenville, N.Y.) was the only player to record a victory. After cruising through the first set, 6-3, Meilak found himself in a second set tiebreaker. He lost the tiebreaker, 7-5, to force a ten-point match tiebreaker to decide the outcome. Meilak clipped the tape on an overhead at match point, allowing his opponent to tie the score at 9-9 in the super tiebreaker. Bu the senior wouldn't be denied. He fended off several match points and eventually prevailed, 13-11.
Curran played well enough to force a second set tiebreaker, but lost the breaker, 7-5 and the match, 6-2, 7-6. Godfrey gave St. Joseph's junior Dan Celentano (Islip, N.Y.) a good run at first singles before losing, 6-3, 6-2.
Tomorrow's match with Lehman College has been postponed due to the pending inclement weather, so next up for the Blue Knights will be a Skyline match-up with Purchase College on Wednesday, April 1. The Mount will host the Panthers in a 7:00 p.m. start.
