EDGEWATER, NJ – The Mount Saint Mary College men's tennis team opened their 2009 season with a 6-3 loss to Yeshiva University at the Binghamton Racquet Club on Thursday evening. The Blue Knights dropped to 0-1 on the season and to 0-1 in Skyline Conference play while the Maccabees improved to 1-3 and evened their record at 1-1 in the Skyline.
Forced to play singles first because of a restriction on court time, Yeshiva snagged five of the six matches to clinch the match. Junior
John Como (Wingdale, N.Y.) was the only winner for the Blue Knights, earning a 6-3, 6-2 victory at sixth singles. Freshman
Tom Curran (Washingtonville, N.Y.) took the first set at second singles, 6-2, but couldn't close the door in the second set, eventually dropping it, 6-4. Curran lost the third set, 6-1.
In doubles action, Curran and junior
Danny Godfrey (West Babylon, N.Y.) picked up a point at first doubles with an 8-6 win. Freshmen
Mike McNicholas (Milton, N.Y.) and
Zach Conlon (Huntington, N.Y.) won by default at second doubles. Juniors
Joe Meilak (Greenville, N.Y.¬) and
Ian Jackson (Washington, N.J.) dropped a tight match at third doubles, 8-6. They led 5-2 early on, but couldn't close the door on a resilient Yeshiva pair.
