NEWBURGH, N.Y. – For the second time in three years, the Mount Saint Mary College women's tennis team captured the Skyline Conference championship and completed an undefeated fall season at 17-0. The Blue Knights earn the Skyline Conference's first-ever automatic qualifier to the NCAA Division III women's tennis tournament.
Mount Saint Mary seized control right out of the gates, dominating the doubles play. Freshman
Gabriela Murphy-Goldberg (Newburgh, N.Y.) and sophomore
Annmarie Llewellyn (Brookhaven, N.Y.) controlled the match from the start and eased to an 8-2 win. Juniors
Rebecca Schwartz (New Windsor, N.Y.) and
Lindsay Searle (Unionville, Conn.) were equally impressive at second doubles and rolled to a 8-2 victory. Freshmen
Emily Gregory (Albertson, N.Y.) and senior
Caitlin Giordano (Walden, N.Y.) teamed for an 8-2 win at third doubles.
Once again, it was the top of the lineup that closed out the match in short order. Searle blanked her opponent in the first set and cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 win. Murphy-Goldberg also won her first set, 6-0, and provided the clinching point for the team when she won the second set, 6-2.
Schwartz, Giordano, freshman Jennifer Gregory (Albertson, N.Y.), and
Emily Gregory were all leading in their singles matches when the match was clinched.
Mount Saint Mary earns the first NCAA Tournament bid in school history and will compete this coming May at a campus site to be determined.
