NEWBURGH, NY – With a sweep of the doubles and a pair of wins in the singles lineup, the Mount Saint Mary College women's tennis team upset Hunter College, 5-4, in a non-conference match on Sunday. Hunter has been to the NCAA tournament in each of the last two seasons and went to the second round of the tournament in 2007. The Blue Knights improved to 2-0 on the season while the Hawks dropped to 1-1.
Freshmen
Annmarie Llewellyn (Brookhaven, N.Y.) and Liz Del Vecchio (Cold Spring, N.Y.) got things started for the Mount by cruising to an 8-1 win at third doubles. Sophomore
Lindsay Searle (Unionville, Conn.) and junior
Rebecca Schwartz (New Windsor, N.Y.) played extremely well at first doubles and earned an 8-4 victory. The big point came at second doubles where juniors
Danielle Kehoe (Goshen, N.Y.) and
Caitlin Giordano (Walden, N.Y.) pulled out a win in a tiebreaker. After switching sides in the tiebreaker at 3-3, Kehoe and Giordano won four of the next five points to take the breaker, 7-4.
Kehoe also came through with a big win in singles. Playing in the third position, the junior rolled to a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Stefanie Smith. But it was Llewellyn who clinched the match for the Blue Knights. The freshman dominated at fifth singles, picking up a 6-1, 6-3 win and giving the Mount the match.
The Blue Knights have several days off before opening their Skyline Conference season at Yeshiva on Wednesday night. The match is scheduled for an 8:00 p.m. start.
