Mount Goes 2-1 Over Weekend

NEWBURGH, NY – With their match winning streak extended to 26 in a row, the Mount Saint Mary College women's tennis team lost their first match in two seasons on Sunday as they dropped a 7-2 decision to Marywood University. Earlier in the weekend, the Blue Knights defeated the College of Staten Island, 8-1, and Polytechnic Institute of NYU, 9-0.

In a marathon-match lasting nearly two hours, Marywood's Ryann Null (Williamsport, Pa.) and Jodi Balch (Matamoras, Pa.) finally bested Lindsay Searle (Unionville, Conn.) and Rebecca Schwartz (New Windsor, N.Y.) 7-5 in a tie-breaker to give Marywood a 9-8 win at first doubles. From there, the Pacers went on to record a 7-2 win over previously unbeaten Mount Saint Mary College Sunday afternoon in non-conference women's tennis action.

Junior Caitlin Giordano (Walden, N.Y.) and freshman Annmarie Llewellyn (Brookhaven, N.Y.) were also involved in a marathon match at second doubles, eventually losing 9-7 to Aubrey Klesh (West Hazleton, Pa.) and Ashley Karli (Blandon, Pa.).

Searle and Giordano captured the only two points for the Mount with singles victories at first and fourth singles, respectively. Searle earned a nice win at the top of the lineup (6-2, 7-5) while Giordano rallied from a poor start to earn a three-set win (0-6, 6-4, 6-2).

On Saturday, the Blue Knights picked up an 8-1 win over the College of Staten Island. All six singles players earned wins in straight sets including freshman Liz Del Vecchio (Cold Spring, N.Y.) who prevailed, 6-2, 6-1, and third singles. Junior Laura Wolons (Middletown, N.Y.) also collected a singles win, cruising to a 6-0, 6-3 triumph in the sixth slot.

Friday evening's match was a complete sweep for the Mount. No player or doubles team allowed even a single game to the team from Polytechnic. The Skyline victory improved the team's conference record to 5-0, allowing them to keep pace with undefeated St. Joseph's College in the standings.

After a few days off, Mount Saint Mary hosts the Sage Colleges for a Skyline match that will go a long way towards determining the seedings and location of the Skyline tournament. Sage currently sits at 4-1 in conference play and would take over one of the top two positions with a win. The match is scheduled for Thursday, October 9 at 7:00 p.m. in Cronomer Park.
