Mount Splits Weekend Tennis, Will Be Second Seed in Tournament

NEWBURGH, NY – Mount Saint Mary College split the final weekend of the women's tennis regular season, defeating Farmingdale State College by a score of 6-3 and falling to St. Joseph's College by a score of 6-3. The Blue Knights finish their schedule at 11-2 overall and in second place in the Skyline Conference with a mark of 7-1.

On Saturday, the Mount took two of three doubles points from Farmingdale. Juniors Caitlin Giordano (Walden, N.Y.) and Danielle Kehoe (Goshen, N.Y.) prevailed 8-5 at second doubles while junior Laura Wolons (Middletown, N.Y.) and freshman Annmarie Llewellyn (Brookhaven, N.Y.) came through with an 8-4 win at third doubles.

Farmingdale took the top two singles points and it was the lower half of the Mount Saint Mary lineup that carried them to the win. Kehoe earned a 6-2, 6-2 victory at third singles and Giordano eased to a 6-1, 6-1 win at fourth. Llewellyn won a tight first set and then cruised in the second set (6-4, 6-1) at fifth singles and Wolons earned a 6-4 first set win before her opponent defaulted due to injury in the second set.

The win over Farmingdale set up a showdown with St. Joseph's College for the top spot in the Skyline Conference. Both teams entered the match with 7-0 records and the winner would wind up as the top seed in the tournament that decides the champion.

The Golden Eagles got off to a very fast start, taking all three doubles points in very close matches. Sophomore Lindsay Searle (Unionville, Conn.) and Schwartz fell 8-6 at first, Giordano and Kehoe lost 8-6 at second, and Llewellyn and Wolons dropped a 9-7 decision at third.

The teams split the singles play to give St. Joseph's a 6-3 win in the match. The Mount took points with Searle at first, Kehoe at third, and Giordano at fourth. Kehoe won her match in a third set super tiebreaker (6-4, 3-6, 11-9) for the second time in four days.

The Blue Knights will enter the Skyline Conference Tournament as the second seed and will host either #3 Sage or #6 Farmingdale in a semifinal match on Thursday. The championship match is scheduled for Saturday and would be at the courts of the highest seed still remaining.
