Knights Hold Off Old Westbury, 4-3

Keenan fires complete game as Knights advance

Old Westbury, N.Y. – Junior Blake Keenan (Fishkill, N.Y.) worked a complete game and a trio of Knights recorded two hits as the Mount Saint Mary College Baseball team advanced in the Skyline Conference Championship with a 4-3 victory on the road at fourth seeded Old Westbury. The win moves the Mount to the double elimination portion of the championship at St. Joseph's-L.I.
 
The two teams traded runs in the third inning before the Mount broke a 1-1 tie in the eighth with three runs. Christopher Introcaso (Newburgh, N.Y.) got the Mount on the board with a single through the left side that delivered John Santana (Warwick, N.Y.) with one out in the inning.
 
Old Westbury answered in the bottom half of the inning with the tying run with two outs in the frame. Jesse Matos started the inning with a single and later scored on a double off the bat of Liam Slattery to even the score at 1-1.
 
With the game tied heading to the eighth inning, the Knights broke through with three tallies. The Mount put together three hits in the inning and took advantage of an Old Westbury error to plate the deciding runs. Introcaso singled and stole second to get into scoring position with two outs and later scored on an infield single from Kevin Edgar (Southampton, N.Y.). Michael Doxey (Highland, N.Y.), who reached on an error, also scored on the play to give the Mount a 3-1 lead.
 
Mount Saint Mary got what proved to be the game winning tally a batter later when Peter Knights (White Plains, N.Y.) shot a single to right field to push home Vincenzo Pepe (Middletow, N.Y.) with the Mount's third run of the inning.
 
Leading by three runs, the Knights saw Old Westbury plate two runs on a pair of hits in their final at-bat. Paul Rapoli tripled home a run with one out in the inning and later scored on a wild pitch to get Old Westbury to within a run. Keenan got the following hitter to ground out to end the game.
 
Introcaso finished the game 2-for-5 with a run, RBI and stolen base, with Edgar and Knights each finishing with two hits. Edgar drove in a pair of runs and Knights delivered the game winning run for the Mount.
 
Rapoli finished with two of the Panther's six hits, including the triple, adding a run and an RBI. Slattery finished with a hit and RBI for Old Westbury with Matos posting a hit and a run scored.
 
Keenan moved to 3-4 on the season and into the team lead in victories with his first complete game of the season and the team's sixth. He allowed three runs on six hits to Old Westbury and struck out two against two walks. Trey Pizzutello worked 8.0 innings and suffered the loss, striking out six.
 
Wednesday's win moves Mount Saint Mary to 13-26 overall on the season. The Knights advance to the double elimination portion of the tournament and will play top seeded St. Joseph's-L.I. in Patchogue at 11:00 a.m.
